Aromatic plants and traditional essential oils
A JOURNEY THROUGH NATURE

The History of Aromatherapy

For thousands of years, people across different civilizations have used aromatic plants, fragrant resins, and botanical oils in daily life, cultural traditions, and rituals.

In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, fragrant plant materials were valued in perfumes, bathing, and ceremonial practices. Across the Middle East and Anatolia, herbal knowledge and the art of preparing aromatic substances developed through generations of craftsmanship.

Advances in distillation, particularly during the medieval Islamic world, contributed to the preparation of fragrant waters and botanical extracts. Rose water became an important part of regional perfume and bathing traditions.

The modern term "aromatherapy" emerged in the twentieth century. Today, the practice brings together historical traditions of fragrance with contemporary interest in essential oils and sensory experiences.

At Little Hagia Sophia, we celebrate this heritage through hands-on aromatic experiences inspired by nature and traditional craftsmanship.
